Psychological Support for people with HIV/AIDS
Prevention
model “AIDS – mobil” of the Frankfurt local health authorities
As far as AIDS prevention is concerned
there is still a great demand for information in Frankfurt. Closely connected
are related topics such as sexuality, partners and drug abuse.
The concept of “AIDS – mobil” comprises three different elements: Element I Transmission of HIV-infection
This concept makes it is possible to vary the sessions. Depending on the respective group topics can be discussed more in detail or in an abbreviated form or new topics can be added. Between 1998 and the year 2000 four new units about AIDS related subjects for discussion were developed. “AIDS – mobil”: Organisation and carrying out of events Once a year a letter of information is sent to the schools in Frankfurt. Then interested teachers contact us. Every week two dates for events are arranged. During the sessions with the students the teachers are not present. Girls and boys are divided into different groups and are taught separately. Two staff members are in charge of organising and carrying out the prevention campaigns. With “AIDS – mobil” about 1000 students
of Frankfurt schools are reached every year.
Statistical data of the year 2000 In the year 2000 we evaluated 453 questionnaires filled in by students. Furthermore there is a table indicating the distribution of male and female participants, nationality, and age. Another table shows which religious group the girls and boys belonged to. The last table is about the question: Who informed you about HIV and AIDS?” It lists answers as school, TV, father and mother. Summary o Approximately 40 % of the students
were foreigners. For HIV prevention it is not the nationality of the students
that is decisive but their cultural and religious background.
With this concept and the methods adopted
we managed to create an atmosphere in which all students showed a high
level of acceptance and openness in the discussion about HIV and AIDS.
